Official sponsor of the Italian sailing team Luna Rossa Challenge, Panerai developed a beautiful model a year ago: Submersible Luna Rossa – 47mm. This piece was inspired by the technologies and materials used in the America’s Cup, the sailing competition is the oldest in the modern world, and one of the most advanced in terms of research and innovation. There, in the first stage, which was in Caligari, Sardinia, Massimiliano Sirena and the other members of the Luna Rossa sailing team wore the new model. “Innovation, technique, Italian excellence, love for the sea and audacity. The partnership between Panerai and Luna Rossa expresses the values with which our brand is so closely linked, the same values that we want to convey to our customers when they vibrate with the emotions that Luna Rossa awakens”, said Jean Marc Pontroué, CEO of Panerai. For Sirena, working with Panerai was a great experience: “As an Italian sailor and passionate about watches, I am proud of this association with a brand that has such impressive references in the field of sailing. A strategic link, the result of shared values and our great common passion”.
Submersible Luna Rossa – 47 mm was the first watch inspired by the association of Panerai and the Challenger of Record of the 36th America’s Cup. It is a waterproof diver’s watch to a depth of 300 meters (30 bar). The case is made of carbotech, an innovative material based on carbon fiber introduced in high-quality watchmaking by Panerai. Its qualities are amazing: it is light, resistant to external shocks, and non-corrosion. Carbon fiber material is also used in the manufacture of the AC75 monocoque, and its image is etched into the watch’s titanium background, along with the Luna Rossa logo and America’s Cup profile. The matte black striated appearance of the case is due to the arrangement of the carbon fibers and gives it a very unique sporty appearance. Another nice detail is the unidirectional rotating bezel to calculate the duration of a dive, also from carbotech. In turn, the dial has a special texture that was obtained with applications of fragments from the Luna Rossa sails. The indications on the dial are visible in all situations, even underwater. The piece has attractive details in red: the small second at 9 o’clock and the central hand that indicates the second time zone and that, when set, showed the start time of the regattas of the 36th America’s Cup that took place on the other side of the world. The Manufacture P.9010 / GMT movement is automatic with a bidirectional oscillating weight and two spring barrels allow a 72-hour power reserve. In addition to displaying the duration of a dive, the watch has a second time zone, a date window at 3 o’clock and a small second at 9 o’clock. The piece is completed with a resistant and waterproof black rubber strap with a satin titanium clasp.
As a way of consolidating the beauty of this piece, Panerai presented at the International Haute Horlogerie Salon (SIAR) in Mexico three new references to put together an unparalleled collection: Luminor Luna Rossa regatta – 47 mm (PAM01038), Luminor Rossa Chrono Flyback – 44mm (PAM01037) and Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44mm (PAM01036). All three clocks are meaningful, differentiated, and challenging. Also inspired by Luna Rossa’s new color code, all three hide bold materials. Meticulously selected by Panerai’s Laboratorio di Idee, the materials have lightness, robustness and resistance to wear. The pieces have layers of Carbotech, carbon fibers bonded and reinforced by polymers. They also have high-tech ceramic, an alchemical compound produced by the transmutation of zirconium oxide powder into a solid state and grade 2 titanium. The Luminor models share the materials with the Luna Rossa AC75, and also the material of the sail that was used. on the dial. The models have been designed for yacht racing, therefore they have the regatta countdown, Flyback chronometer and GMT, which can be set in the Auckland time zone during the 2021 New Zealand regattas. All three calibers have automatic winding and a 72-hour power reserve. The Luminor Luna Rossa caliber P.9100 / R – 47 mm (PAM01038), is the only movement equipped with the countdown prior to the start of the race. It also has a flyback stopwatch, a feature it shares with the Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono Flyback caliber P.9100 – 44mm (PAM1037). The sophisticated P.9010 / GMT movement with second time zone indication is found in the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44mm (PAM01036). Resistant to depths of 300 meters and 100 meters, Luminor Luna Rossa watches come with a black Ponte Vecchio calfskin strap with white stitching, and an additional black rubber strap. The sphere of the pieces is made of the same fabric as Luna Rossa.
